Piku (2015) Film analysis

Piku (2015) was directed by Shoojit Sircar and stars Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Irrfan Khan, which is a critically acclaimed Bollywood film. The comedy, drama and subtle relationships are unique about the movie- especially how it looks at the bond between a father and his daughter.

Plot and Themes.

The major characters in “Piku” are Piko Banerjee (Deepika Padukone), who is an architect in Delhi, and her father Bhashkor Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan), who’s obsessed with his own health situation particularly chronic constipation. The story of the film does not mainly revolve around one kind of plot but rather just deals with everyday life situations involving Piku and her father. It shows interaction among characters as well as their personal development during a journey from Delhi to Kolkata.

Character Analysis.

Piku Banerjee: Deepika Padukone’s rendition of Piku is nuanced and relatable. She is a modern woman who combines taking care of her elderly father with demanding job responsibilities. This character is strong yet weak; she often gets irritated due to strange behavior demonstrated by dad although she remains conscious of him being fragile emotionally. This character departs from conventional representations of women as self-sacrificing daughters because she speaks up for herself without any hesitation.

Bhashkor Banerjee: Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of a hypochondriac, stubborn father. Bhashkor is an endearing figure in the film who you think is self-centered but the fact remains that his whole life revolves around his daughter and his vulnerabilities. His obsession with constipation works as a metaphor he uses to indicate how we control life and fearfulness about the idea of losing it.Rana Chaudhary: Irrfan Khan essays the role of Rana . Rana, owner of a taxi service ends up riding along Piku and Bhashkor to Kolkata. He brings in some sanity in the script. The chemistry he gradually builds with Piku is beautiful. Also serves as a great relief while Piku and Bhashkor display some craziness onscreen, because Rana happens implicitly also have some solutions.

Themes Parent

Child Relationship: Piku is centered on a complex parent-child relationship; it explores the responsibilities, frustrations, and deep bond inherent in such relationships; the film shows us how over time caregivers become cared for.Independence vs. Responsibility: Piku’s character represents the struggle between being independent and having responsibility to family. The movie raises issues about what Indian society expects from children, especially daughters, and how these expectations shape their personal lives.Life and Death: In a subtle way through Bhashkor’s obsession with his health and fear of death, “Piku” reflects on themes of life, aging and death. The movie embraces the inevitability of death but presents it humorously though poignantly as well.

Cinematography and DirectionShoojit Sircar keeps it simple in his direction by focusing on building the characters. The film’s cinematography, Kamaljeet Negi, works with naturalistic lighting and close-up shots to capture the intimate moments between two or more people. It is a beautiful shot of the journey from Delhi to Kolkata serving as a metaphor for emotional journeys.MusicThe music by Anupam Roy is subtle and fits well into the tone of the movie. Music flows smoothly within the story and contributes greatly to its emotional power without being too loud.

Social CommentaryThe film “Piku” subtly criticizes the roles given to women in Indian society, especially towards caregiving. It also ponders on various changes affecting modern Indian homes such as questioning the traditional roles and fostering new kinds of relationships.ConclusionA refreshing take on family dramas in Bollywood is seen through “Piku”. This is a movie which finds beauty and funniness out of nothings as it depicts some small but important aspects of life. Its strength lies in the writing, acting, and characters that we can relate with. With its simplicity and honesty, this heartwarming tale strikes a chord with viewers.
